POSCO LED made inroads into the Japanese LED market after shipping its first overseas orders from Pohang on July 21.
The shipment, which was jointly promoted by the sales and marketing teams at POSCO LED and Daewoo International, marks the first achievement to be made based on collaboration within the POSCO group. Both companies are planning to build stronger ties and work together to leverage Japan as a platform to aggressively penetrate overseas markets.
The lighting products of POSCO LED can be used to replace the entire indoor lighting plans of an office building. Suffering from a power shortage after a recent nuclear reactor accident, Japan is planning to install high-efficiency lighting that is expected to halve power consumption, alleviating power shortage issues. Office workers are expected to benefit from the replacement, as LED products minimize eye exhaustion by reducing glare, as well as improving work efficiency through stronger illumination.
The LED plant in Pohang completed in March this year has the capacity to produce lighting products of 5 million units annually, allowing POSCO to respond to rapidly increasing demand for LED lighting products. The plant houses state-of-the-art manufacturing systems to produce a broad range of products, including industrial LED lighting and indoor LED retrofit products, as well as automated quality assurance facilities.
POSCO LED is also accelerating efforts to penetrate the European market. POSCO recently exported industrial lighting sample products at a major aluminum plant in Europe, with plans to expand supply targets to cover the entire plant.
In June, it won an orders to replace all the lighting at a new plant at POSHIMETAL, a producer of high purity ferro manganes.
Pohang Steel Works recently installed new LED lighting at examination facilities of the second hot rolled sheet manufacturing operations.
