POSCO LED held the ‘2013 POSCO LED Showcase in the USA’ at the Hyatt Regency Philadelphia on April 23-24, 2013, to display its strategic collection of lighting products for the US B2B market. This time, about 100 active customers who were willing to buy LED products attended the event. The LED lighting maker has held a showcase event every year in major markets around the world and this is the third time following the first event held in March 2011, in Japan and the second one in April 2012, in Germany.
POSCO LED’s Bay Light, the main product of this event, is a super energy saving light, which draws 115W or 175W only, to replace conventional HID lamps of industrial and commercial facilities just at over 60% lower power consumption. POSCO LED reduced the weight of the product by 50% to make it easy and safe for users to install.
The product can meet the needs of customers with various conditions for applications. Its concept is ‘One Product Multi-use’—it can be used in a wide range of applications from industrial facilities to commercial places with various optical covers and installation options.
The company has proven the credibility of the product by receiving various certifications around the world, which are famous for their strict standards, and running test beds in major markets. The certifications it has received include UL (Underwriters Laboratories Inc.), a safety-related certification, and DLC (DesignLights™ Consortium), a certification for energy-efficient lighting, in the US as well as CE (Conformite Europeenne Mark), a safety-related certification, and ENEC (European Norm Electrical Certification), an electrical certification, in Europe.
Attempts to drive out mercury lamps, such as fluorescent lamps and high pressure mercury lamps, that are widely used in industrial and commercial facilities, are growing at the government level around the world. In 2013, as many as 140 countries adopted the international treaty aimed at reducing mercury emissions and agreed to prohibit the use of fluorescent lamps by 2020. Europe decided to stop the manufacturing and sales of high pressure mercury lamps by 2015. In line with such a global trend, the demand for Bay Light, an ideal replacement for high pressure mercury lamps, is expected to rise dramatically.
In addition, while introducing various energy saving LED lights for outdoor and indoor environment, the company has suggested a total solution for lighting in buildings, receiving attention from the visitors.
The products it has introduced include AC LED Lamp, an LED lamp for household use that can be directly connected to AC power; Troffer for office use; Linear Light for indoor and semi-outdoor places (e.g., parking lots); and Canopy, an LED lamp that can be used in commercial facilities like car dealer showroom.Currently, the demand for LED lamps is expanding in the US, particularly in the business-to-consumer market, where retrofitting products are in demand, and the business-to-government market. In the case of the business-to-business market, where the focus is put on the replacement for high output lights used in industrial and commercial facilities, the market has not grown yet as the technical limitations caused by the luminous quality stabilization and various regulations serve as an entry barrier.
POSCO LED employs a strategy to differentiate itself from the existing companies, which target the B2C and B2G markets, by developing highly efficient and highly reliable LED lighting products targeting the B2B markets for industrial and commercial use in order to play a leading role in expanding the applications of LED lights in the B2B market in the US. Currently, it is extending the references of the LED lighting applications by applying its products to chain stores, logistics facilities, offices and gyms. It plans to enhance its sales activities by holding another showcase event in the second half of this year.
