POSCO LED, a leading LED lighting manufacturer, said on November 29, 2013, that it has about 50 patents registered worldwide, including Korea, Japan and the US, out of its 400 patent applications filed at intellectual property offices around the world for the past three years since 2011, and that more than 95% of its applications pending substantive examination have obtained the grant of a patent. In Japan, particularly, notorious for its strict examination, the company has been granted 100% for its patent applications.
Among its patent-registered technology, industrial LED lighting technology is drawing the most attention. Most companies manufacture the high power LED package-based products, whereas POSCO LED uses the middle power LED package to resolve heat radiation and achieve competitiveness in quality, performance and price. Other patent-registered inventions include the world’s first mass production technology for indoor, outdoor and industrial LED lamps with the compact and integrated drive IC substituting for SMPS; the heat radiation technology for industrial LED lighting and the street light engine technology.
Kim Dae-won, a leader of Patent Team, POSCO LED, said, “POSCO LED spares 10% of its annual revenues for R&D, and invests 10% of its R&D budget in the management of intellectual properties. Such an investment clearly indicates its emphasis on the enhancement of its competitiveness in IPR. In the future, it will expand its portfolio of intellectual properties related to LED lighting to gain a competitive edge in the LED lighting market with its unparalleled technology capabilities.
