POSCO ICT, an engineering and IT services arm of the world’s fourth-largest steelmaker, is poised to enter the light-emitting diode market.
POSCO launched the company in January by merging its two subsidiaries POSDATA and POSCON. POSCO owns 72.54 percent of the venture.
“The number of people the company hires could vary, and the details of other factors are likely to be set out during the second half of the year,” a POSCO ICT official said. He added that while the plans have not been finalized, the company is unlikely to become directly involved in LED-making processes across the board starting from semiconductors.
“Smart buildings contain energy-saving systems, and buildings become what are called ‘u-cities’ from a larger perspective, so the LED business will create a synergy effect with the company’s existing businesses.
”While the POSCO ICT official said that the LED plans are being executed independent of POSCO, the steelmaker has ambitious plans for the green businesses.
POSCO announced in February plans to invest 7 trillion won ($6.3 billion), including funds from its subsidiaries, into eco-friendly businesses by 2018 with the aim of generating 10 percent of the combined revenues of the POSCO companies from related fields. The steelmaker also acquired 1 percent of the LED maker Seoul Semiconductor in December.
